What is the difference between a conversion goal and a tracked event?
These two concepts are easy to mix up, and the distinction matters for reading your results correctly.
- A conversion goal is the objective. It's the purpose of your website — the action you want visitors to take, like submitting an application form or booking a demo. In Pathmonk, the goal is what your microexperiences are optimized toward (see What is a conversion goal?). A goal by itself is not a conversion count; it's the direction the AI pushes.
- A tracked event is the conversion. When marketers talk about "a conversion," in Pathmonk that's a tracked event: the measured signal confirming that a valuable action actually happened — a confirmation page reached, a pixel fired after checkout, a form completed. Tracked events are what your conversion numbers are made of.
In short: the goal defines what you want; tracked events measure what actually happened.
One goal, several conversions
You don't need one event per goal — most websites measure more conversions than they have goals. A typical setup: a business runs its microexperiences with a single goal (say, "Student forms"), but tracks three separate conversions that matter on its site — an intermediate form step, the completed form, and the purchase. The goal steers the AI; each tracked event counts a real outcome, and each can sit at a different stage of the buying journey.
Where to find them
Go to AI Engine → Event tracking, or directly to crm.pathmonk.com/dashboard/goals?tab=list.

The Goals Overview shows both side by side:
- Pathmonk Goals — your goals
- Tracked Events — your conversions, with how each is measured
To add a new tracked event, click + Add Event (methods explained in How conversion tracking works in Pathmonk).
The goals themselves are configured elsewhere — in CRO → MX Studio → AI Configuration, where you set what the AI optimizes your microexperiences toward.

Reading your numbers
When you want actual conversions, count tracked events — they isolate real completed outcomes. Goal steps help the AI learn the journey, but the events are the numbers your reporting, revenue attribution, and uplift measurement are built on. See Managing tracked events for editing and archiving.
